En enero de 2010, cansado de esperar una oportunidad para acceder al primer equipo, el húngaro Ádám Szalai (25 años) decidió abandonar la cantera del Real Madrid para iniciar una nueva aventura en el Mainz 05. Tres años después, el ariete vuelve a cambiar de aires y se compromete con el Schalke 04.
«Ádám tiene una gran mentalidad, es tenaz, ambicioso y convierte muchas de sus oportunidades. No tuvimos muchas opciones para cubrir la baja de Klaas-Jan Huntelaar cuando se lesionó la temporada pasada. Szalai nos hace estar más cerca de mejorar eso. La competencia entre la plantilla es buena», indicó Horst Heldt, director general de la entidad.
Szalai, que firma por cuatro temporadas, ha supuesto un desembolso cercano a los 8,5 M€.
